Background

The Journey

Michael’s path into fitness community work started during his time at the University of Hong Kong, where he studied Sports Science while working part-time at a local sports center. That’s where the spark happened — watching people find confidence and community through movement.

After graduating in 2012, he spent five years as a group fitness instructor at major Hong Kong gyms. But something felt off. He realized that fitness shouldn’t be locked behind expensive memberships and treadmills. Some of Hong Kong’s best workouts happen on its hiking trails and in its parks.

So in 2015, he started organizing hiking fitness groups. What began as a small group meeting weekly at Victoria Park grew into multiple sessions across Kowloon Peak and the New Territories. Today, he’s leading over 300+ group outdoor sessions annually, engaging more than 5,000 participants from all fitness levels.

His work has been featured in local wellness publications and he’s collaborated with the Hong Kong Tourism Board and district sports associations. But the real measure of success? People who say they never thought they’d enjoy hiking until they tried his sessions.

What He Does

Core Specialties

Michael combines evidence-based fitness principles with deep knowledge of Hong Kong’s unique terrain and community dynamics.

Hiking Fitness Programs

Designing progressive hiking sessions across Victoria Peak, Kowloon Peak, and New Territories trails. Scaling difficulty from beginner-friendly routes to more challenging terrain, with real coaching on technique and pacing.

Park-Based Workouts

Building accessible outdoor fitness sessions in urban parks using natural features and bodyweight training. Programs run year-round at multiple Hong Kong locations, designed for drop-in participation and mixed ability levels.

Community Fitness Meetups

Organizing and leading group fitness meetups that prioritize connection over competition. He’s built a culture where beginners feel welcome alongside experienced athletes, and where the social experience matters as much as the workout.

Social Wellness Strategy

Creating sustainable fitness communities that keep people engaged long-term. His approach recognizes that accountability, friendship, and shared goals often matter more than any individual workout session.

Terrain & Route Planning

Expert knowledge of Hong Kong’s diverse geography — from coastal paths to mountain trails to urban park circuits. He matches routes to seasonal conditions and participant goals, always with safety and accessibility as priorities.

Fitness Education

Translating sports science into practical guidance. He teaches proper form, injury prevention, and how to build sustainable fitness habits — not through lectures, but through direct coaching during sessions.

“Fitness shouldn’t be confined to expensive gyms. Some of Hong Kong’s best workouts happen on its hiking trails and in its parks. The moment people realize they can get stronger while surrounded by friends and fresh air, that’s when it actually sticks.”

— Michael Lau

Why Community Fitness Works

After twelve years in this space, Michael’s convinced that accountability and connection are stronger than willpower. He’s seen people who never stuck with solo gym routines become fitness regulars the moment they joined a group.

The reason? It’s not just about the workout. It’s about showing up for people you’ve gotten to know. It’s the Tuesday morning crew at Victoria Park who’ll notice if you’re missing. It’s the inside jokes during the Kowloon Peak hikes. It’s realizing that getting fit can be genuinely fun instead of another obligation.

That philosophy shapes everything at Peak Collective — the articles he edits, the programs he designs, the way he coaches. Fitness is personal, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.
